UBU, Franco Quadri. Number 3, February 1971. Milan Libri editions, 1970. 24 pages. Pristine condition. Notes In December 1970 Franco Quadri launched his cultural counter-information magazine UBU, published by Milano Libri Edizioni, inspired in its name by Alfred Jarry's Ubu re. The magazine boasted Corrado Augias, Alberto Boatto, Oreste del Buono, Gianni Buttafava, Fernanda Pivano, Gianni Rondolino, Guido Crepax, Roland Topor, Copi, Aldo Rostagno, and Gianfranco Mantegna, among others, on its editorial staff. The title of the magazine is a reference to the grotesque and satirical play Ubu roi by Alfred Jarry (1873-1907), an 1896 comedy whose language, characters and situations are considered works that anticipated the Surrealist movement and the theater of the absurd. Ubu Imperator (1923) is also a painting by Max Ernst.
