The title of the magazine is a reference to the grotesque and satirical play Ubu roi by Alfred Jarry (1873-1907), an 1896 comedy whose language, characters and situations are considered works that anticipated the Surrealist movement and the theater of the absurd. Ubu Imperator (1923) is also a painting by Max Ernst.
