IMPORTANT BRONZE "DAVID, TERRASSANT GOLIATH" by Antonin MERCIÉ (1845-1916) Bronze sculpture with brown patina. Signed on the terrace. Representation of David having decapitated Goliath with one foot on his head. Foundry stamp on the back of the base "Réduction Mécanique A.Collas Breveté" and the mark "F.Barbedienne, Fondeur. Paris". Based on a model exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay. Late 19th century Height: 87 cm Very small scratch His first great successes were David and Gloria Victis, presented in Paris at the Salon of 1872, where they were awarded the Medal of Honor. The bronze group of Gloria Victis, 2.20 m high, was installed in 1884 in the main courtyard of the Paris City Hall, where it remained until 1930; it is currently housed in the Petit Palais. The bronze statue of David is one of his best-known works. The biblical hero is shown with Goliath's head at his feet, and like Donatello's David, he sheathes his sword. This bronze was later exhibited in Montholon Square in Paris. Le Souvenir (1885), a marble high relief, adorns the tomb of Charles Ferry's wife. At the time, its practitioner was François Pompon. Mercié also designed the Monument à Meissonier (1895), erected in the Jardin de l'Infante at the Palais du Louvre, and the Monument à Louis Faidherbe (1896) in Lille, as well as the Monument à Jules Ferry in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges (1896), a Monument to Adolphe Thiers in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, the Monument to Paul Baudry in Père-Lachaise cemetery, and the Monument to Louis-Philippe and Queen Amélie for their burial in the Chapelle-Royale in Dreux. His stone group La Justice is preserved at Paris City Hall. With his master Falguière, he also designed the Monument à Goudouli, which now adorns the basin in Place Wilson square in Toulouse. He created the bronze Moses after Michelangelo that adorns the tomb of Daniel Iffla Osiris in the Montmartre cemetery.
