BUTTERFIELD horizontal sundial in brass. Octagonal baseplate featuring a compass and engraved with four hour scales in alternating Arabic and Roman numerals, inside which is the folding gnomon with adjustable bird. The back features the latitudes of major French and European cities. Signed "Chapotot à Paris". 18th century. Height: 6.5 cm. Width: 5.7 cm. English-born clockmaker Michael Butterfield (1635-1724) settled in France as a manufacturer of precision instruments at the end of the 17th century. This craftsman soon acquired great renown, thanks in particular to the perfecting of the pocket sundial to which he gave his name. Appointed King's Engineer and working for the Court, he was celebrated beyond the kingdom's borders. On a trip to France in 1717, Russian Tsar Peter the Great visited his store, "Aux Armes d'Angleterre", and ordered a large number of sundials from him. By the time of his death, almost all pocket-dial manufacturers had adopted his system, including Chapotot in Paris from the early 18th century.
