Description

Sarcophagus fragment. Roman Empire, 3rd century A.D. Carved marble. Measurements: 43 x 21 x 5 cm. From the fragment of sarcophagus that we present, the work of the carving, precise and defined, in the face of a masculine personage stands out specially. Flanking the main figure there is a linear ornamentation in the form of "S" (strigils). Therefore, the sarcophagus would belong to a typology called "strigilated sarcophagi", which became popular in Rome between the 2nd and 4th centuries. These sarcophagi were placed in hypogea and family mausoleums, where several tombs were deposited together touching on the sides, or arranged in narrow niches, for this reason the sides are always worked in a lower relief, to avoid breakage in case of friction with other sarcophagi or with the walls of the niches. Good examples of this are the mausoleum Z "of the Egyptians" in the Vatican cemetery, where the sarcophagi were placed in niches or the example of tomb 11 of the "Isola Sacra" in Fiumicino, where the sides of the sarcophagi touch each other.
