Italian coins NAPLES Francis I (1825-1830) 15 ducats 1825 - Nomisma 834 AU (g 18.94) RRRR Strikes to rim of which one is heavy. A coin of great rarity, one of the rarest in all of nineteenth-century Italy and not only in the Kingdom of Naples. For example, Gigante proposes it as R/5, the highest on his rating scale. This is why one can count on the fingers of one hand the number of passages for public sale in the last two decades. In a 1963 article, Michele Pannuti published archival documents from which he found that 1937 pieces were minted on January 21, 1826 all, however, with a date of 1825, the first year of Francis I's reign. In the course of time evidently almost all of these specimens were recast. At that time in fact the Neapolitan gold coinage, with its ceilings such as the 30 and 15 ducats, constituted a very important part of the circulating in the Italian peninsula because of their fineness having almost pure title, indicated on the coins themselves as 996 thousandths, well above the 900 thousandths of the coeval decimal coins. For this reason most of the 15 ducats of Francis I were recast and now we are faced with an authentic numismatic gem. Ex Nomisma 64 auction, lot 653 with realization of euro 38,000 plus fees - qSPL
