Description

Roman glass balsamarium or unguentarium, ca. 1st-3rd century CE. With a truncated, conical body, a tall, tubular neck, and an outsplayed rim. Of a light yellow-green coloration. Bottles of this kind were likely used for oils or perfumes as the contents could be slowly poured out drop by drop. They are sometimes referred to as "tear bottles" as it is sometimes believed that they may have been used to catch the tears of mourners and placed in burial tombs, where they have sometimes been found.
