Tibetan repousse silver prayer wheel with a wooden handle, mid-20th century. Prayer wheels, sometimes referred to as "mani korlo" have been mentioned in texts dating to the 11th to 13th century. They are used by placing a tightly coiled text containing mantras, often hundreds of thousands printed with a woodblock, within the wheel and spinning with the weight at the end of the chain to sustain the spinning. Provenance: Gifted to Tulku Tsultrim Zangpo, a Nyingma Guru and root teacher of Nyingma Living Buddha (C.R. Lama) in the 1940s; brought to Nepal in the 1970s-80s; Private Minnesota Collection. Length: 13 in x diameter: 3 in.
