Descripción

Bracket; Spanish school of the eighteenth century. Carved wood, polychrome and gilded. It presents small faults due to the passage of time. In good state of preservation. Measurements: 55 x 60 x 50 cm. This type of corbels were common in the Spanish Baroque school from towards the last third of the XVII century and, although its design was already known in the Middle Ages as well as in the Renaissance, they were only common elements in the Baroque from the realization of the bronze Baldachin of the Basilica of San Pedro of the Vatican in Rome by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, between 1623 and 1634. From this moment on, and with numerous decorative variations, they became a characteristic element of architecture and other Baroque arts, appearing in painting, sculpture, etc. The most common was to decorate them with bunches of grapes and vine leaves, in clear allusion to the Body and Blood of Christ, key elements in the Salvation of Humanity, although, already more towards the 18th century, there will be other examples that add leaves and roses or flowers, responding, surely, to a greater relationship with elements of the Rococo or to an association with a feminine environment. The present motif gives a special character where a polychrome angel stands out among the gilding. It presents small faults due to the passage of time. In good state of preservation.
