Description

Clock with automata scene; Attributed to XAVIER THARIN; France, c. 1860. Paper and lithographed cardboard illuminated in gouache. It has a carved and gilded wood frame. It has slight flaws in the frame. Measurements: 99 x 120 x 24 cm. Musical automaton clock by Xavier Tharin, c. 1860 Paris with hand-colored lithographed scene depicting a Mediterranean port scene with abbey, fountain, viaduct and watchtower on a hill, with two-train clock movement giving the hours and half-hours on the gong, Roman enameled dial of 5.6 cm (2 ½ in.). It shows a friar nodding off reading in a tower room, a musician nodding his head and tapping his foot while strumming a lute, glass rod spinning in the fountain, lady mending the net by the harbor wall, a ship rocking in the foreground and two more on the horizon, a locomotive passing over the viaduct, and the watchtower flag fluttering in the wind. The piece has an elaborate gilt wood frame with instructions for use printed inside. This type of objects were very appreciated since the 19th century, with a great variety of models, usually trying to hide the mechanism that moves them for a greater surprise to the spectator and often accompanied by a musical mechanism. However, they were always elements destined to the upper class, since their construction and design required a high quality and mastery for the delicate machinery and the chosen materials. It presents slight faults in the frame.
