Chaudet was a French sculptor of neoclassical style. He began his artistic training as a student of Jean-Baptiste Stouf at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. In 1805, Napoleon liked this representation of himself in the skin of a Roman emperor, and it was adopted as Napoleon's official portrait until 1810. Chaudet became a member of the Institut de France and, in February 1810, took the position of professor-rector at the École des Beaux-Arts.
