PIETRO PAOLETTI (Belluno, 1801-1847). Didactic souvenir of the Grand Tour. Book with plaster casts. Measurements: 27 x 17 x 5 cm. Collection of "Grand Tour" plaster medallions housed in three volumes of fake book boxes. Each volume includes two compartments with a variety of plaster casts of cameos, sculptures and engraved monuments. With catalog of contents hand inscribed on the inside of the front and back covers. The Paoletti firm was advertised in Count Hawks' guidebook Le Grice Walks Through the Studii of the Sculptors at Rome (1841) as follows: Paoletti begs to inform the public that he has prepared a collection of prints (Impronte in Scajola) of many of the works in sculpture executed by illustrious artists .... Although the Impronte are no more than miniature copies; nevertheless, they exhibit all the fidelity and beauty of the original and convey to the eye a better idea of the sculpted works of art than the more finished engravings. The Paoletti's, whose studio was located in Rome's Piazza di Spagna until 1847, enjoyed a stellar reputation and counted among their clients Catherine the Great of Russia and Ferdinand III, grand duke of Tuscany. The firm continued to operate after Pietro's death until at least 1865. Examples of Paoletti molds are preserved in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, Connecticut.
