Provenance: PIASA sale June 27, 2008, n°39. Size: 97 x 145 cm, 109 x 156 cm (with frame) Expert : Cabinet Turquin Condition : good, old restorations Albrecht Kauw dit le Vieux was a painter born in Strasbourg in 1616 and died in Bern in 1681. Swiss painter, born in Strasbourg. He moved to Bern in 1640, where he lived and worked until the end of his life. He was considered one of Bern's leading still-life painters of the 17th century. According to a history of Bern, he was also a cartographer and vedute painter, and thus had a significant influence on the history of Swiss landscape painting. He produced a large number of decorations for public buildings in Berne and for various castles. While little is known about Kauw's early training in Strasbourg, his still lifes reflect a variety of influences - from contemporary French painters such as Jacques Linard and Louise Moillon, to artists of the German school such as Peter Binoit. However, a number of his still lifes clearly demonstrate a familiarity with painters of the Spanish school, such as Juan Sánchez Cotán and Alejandro de Loarte. His son, Albrecht Kauw the Younger, apparently worked as a painter in Basel, but no works by him have been identified.
