VERRIEN (Nicolas). Livre curieux et utile pour les sçavans et artistes. Paris, quai des Orfevres, au coin de la ruë de Harlay, aux armes de Mademoiselle, [1685]. In-8, marbled havana calf, ornate ribbed spine, gilt lace framing the covers, black morocco title page (18th century binding). First edition, decorated with an engraved and finely colored portrait, an engraved title and an engraved allegorical figure on the verso. It consists of 3 parts, each with its own engraved title: - Latin, Spanish and Italian emblems and mottos. Avec leurs explications françoises. Book one, with 63 plates engraved on the front of the text leaves, representing a total of 945 emblems. - Alphabeth de chiffres simples, doubles et triples fleuronnez, et médailles hiéroglyphiques. Second book, illustrated with 154 engraved plates (one 20 bis) on which are distributed some 2,310 figures and medals or hieroglyphic figures. - Supports and crests for arms ornaments. Book three, containing 17 engraved plates of fanciful coats of arms. Entirely designed and engraved by Nicolas Verrien, this work was intended for all those whose trade required the pictorial use of symbols: "engravers, painters, sculptors, goldsmiths, embroiderers, locksmiths". At the end, there are 28 pp. containing the alphabetical table and the privilege. A fine copy.
