General History of the Things of New Spain is the title of a work written, translated, edited and supervised by the Spanish Franciscan friar Bernardino de Sahagún in Nahuatl (with fragments in Spanish and Latin), between the years of 1540 and 1585, shortly after of the conquest of Mexico-Tenochtitlan. It is also called the Florentine Codex and previously known as the Laurentian Codex, since it is kept in the Laurentian Library, also known as the Laurentian Medicean Library in Florence, Italy. Other versions claim that it could be a copy of previous texts or documents. It is available online on the World Digital Library portal, thanks to the promotion and financing of the United States Library of Congress. Currently, the study of this work is absolutely necessary for anyone who wants to understand the reality of the indigenous world, particularly that of the Mexican highlands.
