Description

Jean JERGER, Besançon. Ten Besançon Tarot cards, stencil enhanced engravings, eight cards stamped France J JERGER in ink (one card with hole), including: Roy De Lepee, Reyne De Lepee, Le Soleil, Valet De Deniers, La Force, Junon, Cavalier Decoupes, Le Roy De Deniers, VII Bâton and II Epée. Early 19th century. Card size : Height 12.2 cm - Width 6.5 cm Presented in the same frame. Note: The "Besançon" tarot is a variant of the Marseilles tarot, probably born in Strasbourg in the early 18th century, in which two cards, the Papess (trump card II) and the Pope (trump card V), are replaced - usually by Juno and Jupiter; perhaps these two cards were considered blasphemous, or perhaps the reference to the papacy was intended to be erased. Originating in Strasbourg, the typical Besançon Tarot is the Tarot de Jean Jerger (1800-1825).
