First edition of this book directed against the Church and addressed to all members of the French clergy: L'ouvrage qu'on va lire ayant pour but de reconnaître la réalité et l'intensité du mal, d'en assigner la cause, d'en découvrir le remède, par-dessus tout de démontrer [...] la non-valeur du ministère ecclésiastique (prologue). A few days after publication, the work was seized and destroyed, forcing Proudhon into exile in Belgium to escape imprisonment. Binding rubbed, three headpieces nicked and slightly missing.
