French Constitution, presented to the King by the National Assembly on September 3, 1791. Vienne, Chize et Pélisson, 1791. One volume. 7 by 11.5 cm. 168 pages. Contemporary full basane, smooth spine decorated with Phrygian bonnets. Boards framed with gilt chains. Binding in good condition, very rare foxing in the text (not serious), small stain on edge. "On September 3, 1791, the Constituante amended and adopted the new Constitution, known as the Constitution of 1791. Louis XVI accepted it on September 141, swore allegiance to it and transformed France from an absolute to a constitutional monarchy. The Constitution abolished the notion of divine right, which gave the king absolute power over France. From then on, the king had to take an oath before the nation, swearing to uphold and enforce the Constitution; he now bore the title of King of the French" Wikipedia. This edition includes the King's speech, the President of the Assembly's reply and a table. The decoration on the spine makes this copy unique...
