Exceptional lined tapestry from Felletin in wool and silk. Borders with ribboned elements: drums, weapons, cannons, quivers, war trophies and scales (symbol of justice) surrounded by floral compositions. Triumphal scene and presentation of the keys to the city, drawn from the history of illustrious women, in particular Artemisia I, mother of King Lygdamis, one of the queens of the ancient Greek city of Halicarnassus (now Bodrum in Turkey). Artemisia I (on the left, crowned, escorted by Persian soldiers identified by their headdresses) was allied with the Persian king Xerxes I, who sent her to defeat Themistocles and the Athenians at SALAMINE in 480 BC. The Persian king Xerxes I led Queen Artemisia to Ephesus, where she entered victoriously and had to deal with Xerxes' illegitimate children. Creuse region, near Aubusson. Late 17th century.
