Paris, Imprimerie de Didot jeune, chez Saugrain, 1793. 4 vols. large in-8 red morocco, smooth spine decorated, gilt title and tomaison, gilt filets and roulette framing the covers, gilt edges (period binding). Minor rubbing. Small scattered brown spots (especially in the margins of the plates and on the serpents). Fine worm gallery in the margin of several pages in volume 4. 4 frontispieces and 80 (28+12+24+16) figures engraved hors texte after Moreau le jeune (of 81 figures, the figure on p. 267 in vol. 4 is missing). Cohen (756) refers to a 5th volume (Acte des Apôtres) published 5 years later in 1798, which is more rarely encountered.

In-folio, [4] ff. n. ch. (engraved title with large allegorical figure, dedication to the States of the United Provinces, to the reader, privilege and table of plates), 21 pp. then pp. 21-65, [2] pp. table, 26 engraved figures in the text (one with fold-out collette), and 10 plates out of text (9 double-page or fold-out showing the various cantonments of the army, one single-page plan between pp. 64 and 65, not mentioned in the table of figures). Angular paper repair on f. 39-40. Imitation blond calf, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt caissons, large framing of garland, stippling, triple gilt fillet with large floral decorations in ecoinçon on the boards, double gilt fillet on the edges, gilt edges, gilt lace framing on the counterplates (Ch. Weill Orléans). Rare first edition of this magnificent publication, one of the finest of its kind for the first half of the 17th century. Between page 20 and page 21 (ff. C2 and C3) another page 21 has been inserted, on a blank verso, entitled Le Troisieme plan d'infanterie, with a figure at the bottom of the recto. Ironed by Gustave de Ridder (1865-1945), former treasurer of the Société des bibliophiles du Palais. A fine copy.

In-4, red chagrin, richly decorated ribbed spine, triple gilt and cold fillet framing the covers with large central plate with rocaille decoration, gilt fillet on the edges, wide gilt inner border, gilt edges (period binding). First edition and first printing of this work by Charles Nodier, based on notes by the Duc d'Orléans. It is illustrated with 40 hors-texte compositions, a folded map and numerous in-text figures by Dauzats, Decamps and Raffet, engraved by Montigneul, Lavoignat, Hébert, Lavieille, Pisan, etc. Exemplary on large wove paper for Count MOLITOR, Marshal of France (1770-1849), with his label affixed to the flyleaf. A superb copy in full contemporary binding, in extremely rare condition. Some light foxing.
