HUGO (Victor). Les Misérables. Paris, Pagnerre, 1862. 10 volumes bound in 5 vol. in-8, brown half-chagrin, spine ribbed, gilt title and tomaison (period binding). French first edition. "From Les Misérables (1862) to the end of the Empire, Victor Hugo's original works were published simultaneously in Paris and Brussels, and I know from M. Paul Meurice that it is always the French edition that must be considered as the original edition, Victor Hugo only correcting the proofs of this edition", Vicaire. Slight rubbing to spines, otherwise a fine copy with wide margins and rare freshness. (Vicaire, IV, 328).

Spines sunned, rubbed, one spine partly split. Frontispiece and 11 plates hors texte after Boulanger, Raffet, Rouargue, Tony and Alfred Johannot. Published in the same year as the first illustrated edition (also published in one volume by Renduel), with the same figures. Some foxing.
