Description
Stanley Inchbold, British 1856-1921- View of a town with a castle from the riverbank; watercolour on paper, signed 'STANLEY INCHBOLD' (lower right), 25.5 x 35.7 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Inchbold is perhaps best-known for his views of North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean, having travelled widely over the course of his career. The present work appears to depict an idyllic British town with a sun-drenched Norman castle and church tower visible above the rooftops, juxtaposed with the somewhat more ruggedly rendered foreground, punctuated with the remnants of machinery and a boat's decaying hull.
