Description

After Bernardino Passeri, Italian c.1540-1596- The Death of the Virgin; oil on canvas, indistinctly signed (lower right), 50 x 39 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work appears to be a copy after Hieronymus Wierix's (1553-1619) print, itself after Passeri, which is the illustration for Plate 150 of Jerónimo Nadal's (1507-1580) 'Adnotationes et meditationes in Evangelia', first published in 1595. Nadal was a very early member of the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits, and was encouraged by Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) to create his own 'Adnotationes et meditationes in Evangelia' ('Notes and Meditations on the Gospels') in the tradition of Loyola's own 'Spiritual Exercises'.
