Set of 10 finely colored lithographed plates of costumes, taken from the atlas of the first edition of the author's first voyage to Africa (lacking the 2 maps and plate 11) + title and table of plates. Slight foxing, more pronounced on the 2 text pages.

Middle East - NIEBUHR (Carsten). Description de l'Arabie, d'après les observations et recherches faites dans le pays même. Paris, Brunet, 1779. 2 volumes in-4, half calf with small corners, ornate smooth spine, title page in red and black calf (period binding). Beginning of split at head of volume 2. [2] 1 ff.n.ch., 56 pp., 252 pp., [1] 315 pp. 3 ff.n.ch. ; 2 vignettes by Marillier, large folding table and 25 plates (maps, costumes, coins, inscriptions, etc.), 9 of which folding. Second French edition of the first scientific expedition to Arabia, considered the best printing of Niebuhr's travel journals. This is the report of the Royal Danish Expedition (1761-1767) to the Arabian Peninsula: the first scientific expedition to this part of the world, financed by King Frederick V of Denmark. The maps are extremely valuable, depicting Oman, the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and Suez. The map of Yemen, which Niebuhr drew mile after mile across the country, made him famous. His map of the Red Sea led the English to rethink the route to India, exploiting the passage through Suez to avoid bypassing Africa, and was used by European explorers in the following century. His map of the Persian Gulf was the first to mention Kuwait, and he was the only one to call the country Yemen rather than Arabia Felix.
