Clemens Freitag, Balzende Auerhähne Pond shore with birches and courting capercaillies in a misty morning autumn landscape, impasto painting in restrained colours, oil on canvas, c. 1930, signed and inscribed "Clemens Freitag München" lower left, indistinct annotation "...berger", minimally in need of cleaning, originally framed in black-brown lacquer moulding, dimensions approx. 60 x 80 cm. Künstlerinfo: also Freytag or Freytag-Koeppen, German painter (1883 Heisingen - 1969 Munich), studied at the Berlin Academy, further artistic training in Düsseldorf and Munich, influenced by the Düsseldorf marine painter Johann Dietrich "Jean" Hendrichs (1882-1937), resident in Munich from ca. 1912, during the 1st World War in Upper Bavaria. During the First World War he lived in Upper Bavaria, where he had friendly contact with the landscape and hunting painter Josef Schmitzberger, undertook study trips to Holland, Friesland, Tyrol and Switzerland, member of the Munich artists' association "Der Bund" and the Reichsverband Bildender Künstler Deutschlands, exhibited at the Munich Glaspalast and the Great German Art Exhibition at the Haus der Deutschen Kunst in Munich, source: Vollmer, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", Dressler, Bruckmann "Münchner Maler des 19./20. Jh." and "Lexikon der Düsseldorfer Malerschule" as well as Wikipedia.

William Woods Holden Document Signed Bond of the State of North Carolina for $1000 issued for the Western North Carolina Railroad Company on April 1, 1869, 15.25 x 20, with 54 coupons intact below. The certificate, which carried a rate of 6%, boasts three vignettes, one of the North Carolina State Capitol, and is signed in ink by Governor William Woods Holden, “W. W. Holden.” Handsomely cloth-matted and framed with a portrait (featuring a facsimile signature) and a plaque to an overall size of 34.75 x 31.5. In fine condition. Holden (1818-1892) served as the 38th and 40th Governor of North Carolina. He was appointed by President Andrew Johnson in 1865 for a brief term and then elected in 1868, and was the second governor in American history to be impeached, the first of such to be removed from office through that process. His impeachment was politically motivated due to his suppression of the Ku Klux Klan. After Republicans lost the 1870 election, Democrats impeached him on eight charges for supposed actions during the Kirk-Holden war. He is the only North Carolina governor to have been impeached. In 2011, Holden was posthumously pardoned by the North Carolina Senate.
