In-4, bradel-style red morocco, ornate smooth spine, triple gilt fillet on covers, double gilt fillet on edges, green morocco lining with triple gilt fillet and gilt border, gilt edges, slipcase, covers preserved (Huser binding). First edition and first print run of this fine, highly-rated publication. The publisher Romagnol, following a dispute with Calmann-Lévy, owner of Prosper Mérimée's rights, was obliged not to publish the true text of La Jacquerie, and to call on Léon Hennique. The work was published six years later by Blaizot, with Mérimée's text and the same compositions by Luc-Olivier Merson (Carteret IV, 275). Limited edition of 500 copies; one of 50 on vellum (third paper) containing 4 states of all Luc Olivier Merson's etched illustrations by Chessa, namely a cover vignette, 1 frontispiece, 1 title vignette and 37 in-text illustrations, some full-page. The text is printed in red and black in typography designed by Cossard. A very fine copy.
