[Bound in cipher.] VARENIUS (Bernhard). Geographia generalis... Amstelodami, ex Off. Elzeviriana, 1671. In-12, [20] f. (including the illustrated engraved title), 784 p., pl., contemporary fawn basane, 5-nerved spine, gilt title, gilt fleur-de-lys and PS cipher, boards richly decorated with a framed roulette, a laurel medallion, a fleur-de-lys semé and a repeated PS cipher, gilt roulettes at the edges, gilt edges. New edition of this landmark work in the evolution of geographical science, of which Newton published an annotated edition in 1681. It contains 4 folding tables, a folding plate and a woodcut figure on p. 337. A handsome copy decorated with the College de Plessis-Sorbonne's cypher. Provenance: Viscount A. de Montmarin (stamp on one endpaper); Jules Couet, librarian of the Comédie-Française (? - 1938, bookplate); André Deruelle, bookseller, 20th c., (bookplate).
