Thangka. Tibet, 19th century. Mixed technique on fabric. The wooden frame has some Chips. It has slight flaws in the paint and wear. Measurements: 84 x 59 cm; 92 x 61 cm (frame). Tibetan thangka with a central representation of a boddhisattva surrounded by a rich genealogy of worshipers. The central figure could be Padmasambhava, the great Buddhist teacher of Uddiyana, in present-day Pakistan, introducer of Buddhism in Tibet during the 8th century AD. Tibetan thangkas are Buddhist banners, painted or embroidered on silk, other fabrics or paper, which can be rolled. They were hung in monasteries and family altars, and occasionally carried by monks in religious processions. Originally, thangka paintings became popular among itinerant monks, as scroll paintings were easy to transport from one monastery to another. They were also important teaching instruments, as they showed scenes from the life of Buddha, prominent lamas and bodhisattvas.

Tibetan Thangka of the 19th century. "Padmasambhava and consorts". Oil on canvas. The canvas is damaged. Measurements: 100 x 75 cm; 111 x 85 cm (frame). Thangka with the representation of Padmasambhava, from Tibet. Padmasambhava was the great Buddhist master of Uddiyana, in the present Pakistan, introducer of Buddhism in Tibet during the VIII century AD. He is depicted flanked by his two wives, the Bengali princess Mandarava (right) and the Tibetan Yeshe Tshogyal (left). In the background, a landscape with small villages has been depicted. Tibetan Thangka, 19th century. "Guru Dragpo and the guardians". Painting on cotton. It presents marks of use and wear. Measurements: 47 x 34 cm. In his iconographic form, Guru Dragpo is typically represented with a fierce and dynamic aspect, as we appreciate in this thangka. He holds a spear in one hand and often rides a lion or a tiger, symbolizing his dominion over negative forces and the protection of sentient beings. He is surrounded by "guardians" or "Dharmapalas", protective deities who safeguard Buddhist principles and Dharma practitioners.
