Abraham van Cuylenborch, um 1610 Utrecht – 1658 ebenda DIANA WITH HER NYMPHS AND ACTAEON Oil on wood. Parquetted. 60 x 71 cm. Signature omitted lower right. In gilded frame with ornamental reliefs. Actaeon surprises Diana during the hunt when she bathes naked in the company of some nymphs. In revenge, the goddess transforms him into a stag and the hunter is mauled by his own hounds, who do not recognize him. Not much is known about the life of the artist, who worked almost exclusively in his birthplace of Utrecht. It is assumed that he joined the local St. Luke's Guild between 1639 and 1651. His dated paintings are mainly to be found in the period between 1642 and 1648. Provenance: Private collection, Munich, acquired in the 1970s. (1390587) (13)
