Description

Flämischer Meister um 1600, nach dem Vorbild Giovanni Antonio de‘Sacchis Pordenone (1483 – 1539)

DEPICTION OF THREE SAINTS: SEBASTIAN, CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA AND ROCHUS OF MONTPELLIER Oil on wood. 46 x 32.5 cm. Inscribed on the verso as a work by Martin de Vos (1536-1603) and with the names of the saints. In front of a landscape background on the left, Saint Sebastian is tied to a tree with his arms raised, his muscular body clad only in a white cloth around his waist, his gaze directed to the right towards Saint Catherine in a green robe and reddish cloak, who has an open book lying on the attribute assigned to her, a wheel. She has brought her left hand to her chest and is looking up to the sky with her head raised. Sitting in front of her is St. Roch, who is pointing out the plague mark on his thigh to a putto standing next to him by exposing his left leg. Rather rare composition of these three saints, who are particularly emphasized by the lighting and colours. Isolated retouches. Annotation: The original painting from 1532/33 is in the church of San Giovanni Elemosinario in Venice. (1401073) (18)
