Römische Schule des 17. Jahrhunderts (1620/30) DIANA AND HER NYMPHS BATHING Oil on wood. 51.5 x 42.5 cm. Monogrammed lower left, inscribed "J. Heintz" verso. In decorative frame. Enclosed is a copy of a pigment analysis by Prof. Dr. Schreiner, Vienna, September 2020. In a mountainous landscape on the shore of a lake, the standing nude Diana with bright incarnation, wearing a crescent moon on her blonde coiffed hair, as a reference to her as goddess of the moon. Another reference to her as the goddess of the hunt is a quiver of arrows hanging from a tree trunk on the left. Diana is in an embrace with a nymph and is also surrounded by other nymphs, some drying themselves with red, blue and white cloths, two of which can be seen in the water in the middle of the background. With her outstretched arm, she seems to be pointing towards Callisto, who is sitting in the lower left corner of the picture and covering herself with a cloth, but Diana has already discovered her concealed pregnancy. Depiction in which the light-colored naked bodies stand out against the dark surroundings.
