SERMON OF JOHN THE BAPTIST Oil on wood. Parquetry. 75 x 105 cm. In gilded frame with ornamental relief. Gently undulating landscape staggered in depth by changing polychrome design with a tree in the foreground with numerous figures around it, to the right of the tree John the Baptist in the midst of his sermon; the same in the middle ground in the process of baptizing Jesus in both local and temporal succession, for John denies his nature as the Messiah and refers to someone who comes after him and is greater than himself. Nevertheless, he demands that those present be baptized and convert to God. In many ways, the present painting is similar to the version with the same subject by Vinckboon from 1621 in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich (inv. no. 1937, 79 x 129 cm, oil on wood). Literature: Cf.
