Pair of paintings VIEW OF THE TOUR DE NESLE AND THE PONT NEUF and VIEW OF THE PONT NEUF WITH HENRY IV EQUESTRIAN MONUMENT Oil on canvas. Doubled. 93 x 143 cm and 100 x 140 cm. With a label of the Getty Museum verso. In fine carved and gilded frames. Each foreground with a lavish figure scene with riders, some on horseback crossing the waters of the Seine, and numerous figures moving across the Pont Neuf on foot in small groups, on horseback or in carriages. The historically valuable views of Paris offer a vivid impression of life and activity in the French capital at the end of the 17th century, with one painting rendered in vivid colors and the other as a grisaille. The sources for this painter, who was very well known in his time, are rather sparse, but it is known that he was admitted to the Guild of St. Luke in Brussels in 1671 and it is assumed that he worked in Paris between 1675 and 1677, where the present paintings may have been created. Here he often collaborated with Adriaen Frans Boudewijns, a Flemish painter who was also living in Paris at the time. He then returned to Brussels in 1677, where he remained active as an artist until the end of his life. Although he worked in various genres, he is best known for his landscape paintings, in particular his views of towns and villages, harbors and riverbanks. These views are in the tradition of Jan Brueghel the Elder, but also show influences from David Teniers the Younger and his compatriot Boudewijns. While the more colorful painting is much more detailed and thus more realistic in its architectural treatment, and thus bears eloquent witness to the architecture of the French capital around 1675, the painting with the Nesle Tower is almost abstract in its depiction through the use of the grisaille technique and at the same time exerts a very special fascination and attraction on the viewer.
