TWO INDIAN VERMILLION RED-LACQUERED WOODEN DOWRY JARS AN EYE FOR DETAIL: PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE ESTATE IN NORTHERN LONDON Possibly Karnataka, South India, late 19th - 20th century Each of traditional globular shape, resting on a slightly raised foot, with a circular opening at the top surmounted by a hemispherical, dome-like lid, the wooden exterior of the largest jar lacquered and painted in traditional Indian village colours including vermillion red, ochre yellow, black and green, the latter plainer and lacquered in just two tones, black and red, the shape and design of these typical vessels indicating a home-use in Indian abodes often forming part of Indian bride's dowry sets, the largest 25.5cm high, the smallest 18.3cm high.
