Description

France, reign of Louis XVI (1774-1793). Naval officer's flintlock pistol known as a chien de mer head, circa 1780. Cal. 14 mm. All metal parts in their original finish, white polished and bronzed for the barrel. Round barrel with very light tanning. Illegible manufacturer's markings stamped on the left side of the barrel. Round-bodied flintlock lock, round-bodied swan-neck hammer. Iron fittings. Beautiful walnut stock with short shaft carved with a "sea dog" head. Iron nailhead ramrod. Mechanism with two cocking notches partly functional, the hammer holds the cocking notches but no longer strikes, the spring too weak (to be overhauled). Inside of barrel with minor surface oxidation. Complete. (Good condition). 28.5 cm (barrel 16 cm).
