Asia. Souvenir of my cruise in the Far East. Photo album. [Shanghai, Hong Kong, Haiphong, Bay of Along, Saigon, etc.], [1936-1939]. In-4 oblong (26.3 x 36 cm), black silk covered on the upper cover with a large embroidered motif depicting two dragons (period binding). Collection of 408 photographs taken during the Dumont d'Urville's campaign in the Far East between 1936 and 1939. The photographs, of varying dimensions, are mounted on the front and back of each sheet. They are unsigned; some have a caption in the lower part of the plate, or are accompanied by a handwritten caption on the album pages. They mainly depict Chinese and Indochinese cities, harbors, roadsteads, warships (including the Dumont d'Urville), bombing scenes in Shanghai, buildings, dwellings, streets, temples, monuments, costumed inhabitants, group scenes, small boats, picturesque sites, and more. Among the photographs depicting the bombings, some have been shot against a red background, to emphasize the dramatic nature of the events. Some photographs relate to Japan, India, the Philippines, Australia and the New Hebrides. China is represented by 196 photographs (including the Sino-Japanese conflict), Indochina by 114 photographs, and various other countries by 98 photographs (Japan, Singapore, India, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia and the New Hebrides). Photographs in very good condition. Corners worn, spine partly detached.
