A pair of German percussion pistols by Johann Rieger in Munich, circa 1850 Rifled octagonal barrels of Damascus steel in 12.5 mm caliber, bores slightly rough and in need of cleaning, patent breechblocks and blades with vine engraving, each numbered "2767". Percussion locks also with vine engraving and marked "Rieger" and "München" in silver (one lock defective). Half stocks with trigger guards engraved en suite as well as chequering and white bronze inlays in the grips. One forearm cracked. Length 34 cm each. Condition: II - III

LEBEDA, PRAGUE A MAGNIFICENT CASED PAIR OF DELUXE 14mm PERCUSSION CONTINENTAL TARGET PISTOLS, no visible serial numbers, circa 1845, with blued octagonal 9 1/2in. rifled barrels, blind narrow flutes to the angles of the flats, the top-flats signed in gilt script 'A.V. LEBEDA A PRAGUE', fully engraved breech-blocks 'in the white', moulded nipple-bosses, dove-tailed bead fore-sights, adjustable notch rear-sights, the engraved top-tangs numbered '1' and '2' respectively, rococo scroll engraved hump-backed locks with dipped tails signed 'LEBEDA' to pistol No.1 and 'A. PRAGUE' to No.2 and also featuring engravings of lyre-players and nymphs, the detail accentuated in gold, en-suite hammers, walnut half-stocks finely relief-carved with raised rococo scroll-work to the grips and fore-end tips, the grips also with central finely chequered panels, engraved domed butt-caps with central spires, spurred trigger guard bows engraved with the figure of Dionysus holding the staff Thyrsus with a leopard draped over his lap, engraved oval barrel-key escutcheons, both pistols in fine order with much finish remaining and in their maker's presentation mahogany veneered case (some mild lifting and repairs), the case lined and compartmented in the Continental manner in green baize and retaining the complex-shaped ebony lidded compartments with turned bone handles and a full suite of original accessories including horn loading mallet and handled tools, powder flask, Boche, Paris snail capper, mould and loading rods, the exterior with moulded and carved hook close and central lock (with key).

Laut Hagen veröffentlichte Wolffs Vater, der Botaniker Johann Philipp Wolff (1743 oder 1747-1825), den letzten Teil 1811. - Nur selten minimal fleckig. First German edition, simultaneous with the Latin edition. Johann Friedrich Wolff (1778-1806) was a German zoologist (mainly entomologist and botanist) who described various species and genera. The German edition was published parallel to an edition in Latin (Icones cimicum). The publication contains many new species which are magnificently illustrated. Contemporary copies, which were originally colored by hand, are very rare. According to Hagen, Wolff's father, the botanist Johann Philipp Wolff (1743 or 1747-1825), published the last part in 1811 - Only rarely minimally stained.
