A musket modified for civilian use, probably French, late 18th century Smooth bore barrel in 18 mm caliber, surface cleaned and pitted in places, especially in the pistol area. Converted percussion lock with traces of corrosion (defective). Shortened and modified half stock, stamped "1TV" on right side of butt stock. Butt nose and ramrod socket with cracks, butt with wormholes. Iron furniture, cleaning rod not included. All parts with heavy signs of age and use. Length 147 cm. Condition: IV

Abmessung in geöffnetem Zustand ca. H 53 x B 44 cm. Die ursprüngliche Verwendung wohl als Staffagerequisiten für Marionetten- und Puppentheater. Der auch mit einer Hand zu bedienende Öffnungsmechanismus ermöglichte eine für diese Bühnen effiziente Möglichkeit, den Überraschungseffekt eines sich im Handumdrehen aufschlagenden Pfauenrades spektakulär zu nutzen, eine Technik, die in Zeiten des zu Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts blühenden Orientalismus auf Volksmärkten und Kleinbühnen sicherlich geschätzt wurde. - Mit wenigen und unscheinbaren Randläsuren, die metallischen Partikel tls. etw. oxidiert. Insgesamt außergewöhnlich gut erhaltene Beispiele für frühe Pop-up-Objekte sowie ausgesprochen dekorativ. Theatre - Pair of peacocks. Mixed media: cardboard base with simple, hand-operated and lockable folding device on the back, with applied, hand-painted crepe paper with small metallic particles, cutouts for neck, head and foot sections lithographically printed on both sides, multi-layered China paper. - The original use probably as staffage props for marionette and puppet theaters. The opening mechanism, which can also be operated with one hand, made it possible for these stages to use the surprise effect of a peacock's wheel in the blink of an eye in a spectacular way, a technique that was certainly appreciated at folk markets and small stages in times of orientalism, which was flourishing at the beginning of the 20th century. - With few and inconspicuous marginal defects, the metallic particles partly somewhat oxidized.
