Artist information: actually Peter Heinrich Lambert Hess, also Heß, from 1861 Ritter von Hess (1792 Düsseldorf to 1871 Munich), son of the engraver Carl Ernst Christoph Hess, pupil of his father, from 1809 briefly studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, largely self-taught, travelled to Austria, Italy and Switzerland, in 1814 he created his first large-format painting "Schlacht von Arcis sur Aube", in 1833 accompanied King Otto to Greece, in 1839 he accepted an invitation from Tsar Nicholas I. to Moscow and St. Petersburg, then created frescoes for the arcades of the Munich Hofgarten, knighthood in 1861, source: Thieme-Becker, Bruckmann-Münchner Malerei des 19.
