A helmet M 1896 for enlisted men/NCOs of the Pioneers Black lacquered leather skull (crackled front peak, front peak seam open) with nickel silver fittings. Screwed emblem on the front (originally wedged, one threaded bolt detached), neck strap with ventilation slider, rotating smooth point on plate with four round-headed pins. Leather chinscales on button 91, imperial and national cockade of lacquered sheet metal. Good brown leather flap lining. Reworked, straps and cockades replaced. Partially slightly damaged, signs of age. Condition: II - III

Olympic Games/ Spring, 1896/ Athens/ Pole Vault/ A surprising pre-Olympic trophy, but one that brings to mind the first Olympic pole-vault champion. In fact, less than a month elapsed between Massachusetts Institute of Technology student William Welles Hoyt (1875-1954) receiving this trophy for a pole-vaulting victory on March 14, 1896 in the USA, and the title he won in Athens on April 10, 1896, with a leap of 3.30m. This typically American pewter trophy, with its two voluptuous handles, is signed Wood and Sons in Chicago. Measuring 10cm with a lovely diameter of 12, it still reflects its owner, an Olympic champion and pioneer of the specialty. After graduating from Harvard in 1897, Mr. Hoyt became a doctor in 1901, then a surgeon, and operated at the front in 1914-18, before settling in France and returning to the United States. He died in 1954, between two Olympic pole-vaulting victories by his compatriot Bob Richards, another phenomenon dubbed the Flying Pastor. Pole vaulting was the great American specialty, and it was Hoyt who brought it to life here, as this perfectly unique piece reminds us.

Olympic Games/ summer, 1896/ Athens/ Three major pieces about the first Olympic champion in modern history, American student James Brendan Connolly (1868-1957): a) "An Olympic Victor, a study of the modern games", by James Brendan Connolly, illutrated cover, the Athens Parthenon, with six illustrations by André Castaigne (1861-1929). 1908, 186 pages (original edition) b) small handwritten letter from 1906, with fine signature by James B. Connolly (very, very rare); c) "Sea Borne, thirty years Avoyaging" by James B.Connolly, 1944, 246 pages. The first Olympic champion in history (April 6, 1896, in the triple jump, with 13m71) was also a remarkable journalist and writer, author of some twenty novels. Before being awarded the Pulitzer Prize, he had opened the new Olympic prize list, and even improved it by finishing 2nd in the high jump (1m65) and 3rd in the long jump (6m11) (his book tells the story). In 1900, in Paris, he tripled his performance (13m97), finishing 2nd. It should be noted that he was only 1.52 m tall, and that in 1896, at the age of 27, he had to break his student contract at Harvard to go to Athens. In other words, this original collection on an extraordinary athlete (four-time Olympic medallist and Pulitzer Prize winner) is exceptional. From the account of his fabulous initial experience to his consecration, or the springboard sport for a triple jumper, what could be more banal?
