Description

Oval mirror on the reverse adorned with a polychrome painted enamel plate with pearls and gold highlights depicting Orpheus charming the animals. In a wooded landscape, the poet is seated on a mound, playing his lyre, surrounded by various animals: a lion, a stag, a horse, a billy goat, a leporid, a dog, a monkey and three birds. Mounted in gilded bronze with a mobile ring. Limoges, attributed to Jean II Limosin, circa 1600 H. at sight 11.5 cm - L. at sight 8.5 cm H. with bélière 12 cm (some restorations, notably to Orpheus' dress, minor crazing) Unlike other mirror backs illustrating the same subject, such as those in the British Museum (inv. 1891,0224.6) or the Musée du Louvre (inv. MR2624), the composition of this scene of Orpheus charming the animals is freely inspired by Bernard Salomon's engraving from Ovid's Metamorphosis figured in 1557 (fig.). Works consulted : - S.
