Description

Winged and crowned phallus, profane sign, in lead and pewter alloy; pin marks on reverse. Last quarter of 14th century H. 3.1 cm - W. 3.8 cm Classified as an "erotic" sign, this winged phallus had more of an apotropaic value. Examples of this type were unearthed in Paris during the dredging of the Seine, and several were in the famous Forgeais collection. Although it does not appear to have been fitted with legs or a bell, like the examples in the Musée de Cluny, this one is particularly well preserved, with fine details. Book consulted : - D. Bruna, Enseignes de pèlerinage et enseignes profanes, Musée national du Moyen Age - Thermes de Cluny, Paris, 1996, p. 317-318
