Description

Capital in limestone, carved on all sides. Flared basket decorated with two rows of large acanthus leaves, surmounted by stems ending in crooks at the four corners; the dice of the abacus are decorated on each side with various motifs, an ox head, a feline head and rosettes in high relief. Orléanais, 11th century H. 39.5 cm - W. 44 cm - D. 44.8 cm (some visible damage and missing parts) This capital is an early example of Romanesque art; it can be compared with another capital discovered in 1941 in Orléans in the ruins of Saint-Paul church following the events of 1940, belonging to the previous 11th-century church. Now housed in the city's Musée des Beaux-Arts, it features a similar arrangement of acanthus leaves, with dice similarly adorned with heads and rosettes in high relief (inv. 168, fig.).
