Contemporary full basane, smooth spine decorated with Phrygian bonnets. Boards framed with gilt chains. Binding in good condition, very rare foxing in the text (not serious), small stain on edge. "On September 3, 1791, the Constituante amended and adopted the new Constitution, known as the Constitution of 1791. Louis XVI accepted it on September 141, swore allegiance to it and transformed France from an absolute to a constitutional monarchy. The Constitution abolished the notion of divine right, which gave the king absolute power over France. From then on, the king had to take an oath before the nation, swearing to uphold and enforce the Constitution; he now bore the title of King of the French" Wikipedia. Paris, Imprimerie Nationale Exécutive du Louvre, An II de la République [1793]. Large in-4 of 24 pp. in ff. uncut. Enclosed is a 4-page in-4 decree of the Convention Nationale (n°1124) (Imprimerie Nationale Exécutive du Louvre, 1793) instituting the death penalty for falsifiers of the Declaration of the Rights of Man (à bon entendeur...). Very good condition for these two historical documents.

Small in-16 (10 x 6.5 cm), 160 pp, red morocco, smooth spine decorated, gilt title, gilt roulette framing the boards, gilt edges (binding slightly post.). Small portable edition of the Constitution of 1791, printed by Didot Jeune in the year of its proclamation. Beautiful small-format edition, finely printed on wove paper in the typeface of Pierre-François Didot, dit le jeune. It is of particular interest, reflecting the importance of the text at the time: the idea was to publish the French Constitution in a format small enough to be transported in all circumstances, and accessible for a relatively modest sum; in this respect, this edition was a real success. In addition to the full text of the Constitution, it contains the King's letter and acceptance speech, together with a table of contents. The result of the work of the Constituent Assembly, the first French Constitution was proclaimed on September 3, 1791. It is divided into seven titles and two hundred and eight articles, preceded by the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Spine slightly faded, one corner worn.
