One volume. 26.5 by 35 cm. 10 cartons with laminated drawings (sometimes several per carton). In a folder with a beautiful color illustration on the 1st cover, spine in green percaline. Folder in good condition, very rare foxing on the boards. With Une excursion à la Grande Chartreuse, by Hector Guiot, 1892. One volume. 23.5 by 31.5 cm. 3 boards illustrated on both sides with drawings taking the form of a newspaper article, mounted on tabs. Very handsome illustrated cover for this full-paper book covered by a lined cover. Small defect at one corner, otherwise very good condition for this highly original travelogue. With Comment les petits ruisseaux font les grandes rivières. Idylle. Hector Guiot, 1878. One volume. 23 by 30.5 cm. 21 boards with text and illustrations on both sides, mounted on tabs. Full contemporary black cloth, titled on the 1st board. The drawings are laminated. Minor defects on a manuscript in very good condition. Also included: GUIOT (Hector) and PILLET (J.): Le dessin de paysage étudié d'après nature. Paris, Nony, 1889. One volume. 27 by 17 cm. 47 pages. Publisher's half cloth, illustrated hardcover. Bumped.

[HELVÉTIUS (Claude Adrien)]. De l'Esprit. Paris, Durand, 1758. In-4 of (1) ff. xxii-643-(1) pp. red morocco, ornate ribbed spine, green mar. title page, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt edges (period binding). Rubbed and scratched, binding re-tinted and restored. Paper slightly browned in places, scattered foxing, pink stain in margin of first pages. Without the portrait of Peter II, King of Portugal, which is sometimes added to some copies. First edition. Hardback copy. "First edition of this famous work, censured by the Sorbonne as containing 'all the poisons scattered in the various modern books', i.e. contemporary [...] The work, dedicated to the royal family, was rejected by the latter, and on August 10, a few days after publication, the privilege, given on May 12, was revoked. In spite of the Lettre au révérend père... [Berthier ou Pleix] which constitutes an apology and a retraction, followed by another more explicit retraction, the book was censured by the clergy [...] Helvétius then submitted a third to Joly de Fleury, avocat général, on January 22, 1759; on the 31st appeared the letter from the Pope, and on April 9 the censure from the Faculté de Théologie. Fleury had already issued his requisitions on January 23, while sparing the author himself, and on February 6, 1759, the Parlement handed down its judgment; the book was burned on the 10th. Helvetius resigned as maître d'hôtel dela rine; the censor resigned. Helvetius made these retractions out of friendship for his censor Texier, who had had a lot of trouble with him. This retraction is found attached to some copies. These copies feature Cartons on pages 1-16, 35-38, 59-62, 67-70, 75-78, 139-142, 145-54, 159-160, 169-176, 187-190, 227-230, 233-234, 239-240, 459-462, 545-550, 603-606. These corrections, considerable at the time, no longer seem so moving; time and events have passed. Helvetius had copies printed for his friends. [...]" (Tchemerzine VI 188-189). "One cannot see without indignation that one persecutes with this continuous relentlessness a book that this persecution alone can make dangerous by making the reader search for the hidden venom that one supposes in it", Voltaire, Letter to Thieriot, February 7, 1759.
