Schifffahrt. A pair of harbor scenes. Gouache on paper. Not signed and dated. (around 1780). Approx. 19.5 x 30 cm. - Under glass (unopened). The two decorative landscape-format sheets depict the hustle and bustle of 18th century port cities. Freight is loaded in barrels from or onto the ship and numerous men and women watch the hustle and bustle. The fortified banks run into a high wall on one side. - Overall, the sheets are painted in a calm color scheme dominated by shades of blue and grey, with strong red as the local color in the people's clothing. The color scheme of blue, white and red possibly points to Holland or France. - One sheet with larger but discreet retouching at crease on the right, the other with small discreet retouching at a scratch, each slightly dusty and minimally stained.
