Note: Denny Jacobs, born in 1945, hails from Arnhem and has established himself as a prominent painter renowned for his prolific output of nude portraits and charmingly naive yet realistic depictions of village life, drawn from his cherished childhood memories. Jacobs's journey as an artist is intricately woven with personal anecdotes, as he once revealed, "I was bitten by a dog in the past. That's when I started painting." He delights in regaling anyone who will lend an ear with tales of his colorful past exploits, including encounters with "a famous actress," as well as reminiscing about a girl he immortalized on canvas. Not without his share of tumultuous experiences, Jacobs openly acknowledges his past involvement with drugs and the gritty nightlife scene, themes that permeate his earlier works capturing the vagrants and luminaries of Arnhem during the 1980s and 1990s. Under the tutelage of the esteemed artist Harry van Kruiningen, Jacobs honed his craft, mastering the intricacies of painting interiors and portraits. His artistic journey also led him to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem and later at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. In recognition of his contribution to the art world, the Henriette Polak Museum in Zutphen curated a retrospective exhibition of Jacobs's work in 1995, showcasing the evolution of his distinctive artistic vision.

Contemporary full marbled basane, smooth spine, red title-pieces, black head-pieces, ornate spine, gilt chain framing the boards, roulette on the edges. Corners worn, spine slightly cracked, a split of ' cm on a jaw. Minor stains on 4 pages, a few spots. Two small tears on the edges of the maps, restored; frontispiece with freckles. Despite these minor defects, this is an entirely correct copy. First French edition. Chadenat II, 5027. "In 1793, William George Browne set out for the interior of Africa by sailing up the Nile. He then joined a caravan to cross the desert and reach the kingdom of Darfur, in the Egyptian Sudan. Arrested and detained by the local sultan, he was not released until 1796 and returned north. Browne returned safely to England in 1798, but was murdered by brigands in Tabriz in 1813 during a new expedition. The present work contains the first description of the region by a European. It contains many details of the geography and monuments, trade relations, government and customs of the local population, not forgetting the dangers encountered by travellers.

JOAQUIN XAUDARÓ Y ECHAU (Vigan, Philippines, 1872 - Madrid, 1933). "Conversing with the painter". Ink on paper. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 15 x 21 cm; 24 x 30 cm (frame). Cartoonist, illustrator and caricaturist, Joaquín Xaudaró was famous for his drawings about the new technologies of his time, and his style establishes a connection between 19th and 20th century illustration. Educated in Paris and London, he began his career drawing for "Madrid Cómico", "La Saeta", "Gedeón" and "Barcelona Cómica", occasionally using the pseudonym J. O'Raduax. Between 1907 and 1914 he also drew for the Parisian newspaper "Le Rire". In the following years he collaborated with "Blanco y negro" and "ABC", in Madrid, achieving special fame in the latter newspaper thanks to a small dog known as "perrito de Xaudaró". As a book illustrator he collaborated with French and Spanish publishers, and between 1917 and 1930 he made three cartoon films. His success was such that several collections were published with his illustrations. He also worked as a set designer.
