Presentiment and present. Portfolio with 33 original etchings on the novel of the same name by Josef Freiherr von Eichendorff. Stuttgart, Dr. Benno Filser Kunstverlag 1919. folio. The etchings all signed and mostly with the signature or monogram and partly with the date in the plate. Original mounts with the embossed sheet number. On laid paper. Size: 11 x 8.5 to 14.6 x 10 cm. Slight foxing, portfolio browned and stained, minor traces of age - Eberz only turned to etching as a graphic technique late in his career. The etchings had been commissioned by the publisher as illustrations, but were ultimately published separately from the text as a portfolio. "The sheets are ... not all of equal value, there are weaker ones ... but in others - and they are by far in the majority - the condensed content almost bursts the narrow format. An effortless and often refined mastery of the means mostly lets the artist's painterly intentions come into their own ... " (op. cit., p. 14).
