Pair of Jue ritual cups; China, Qing dynasty, Kangxi Period, 1662-1722-. Glazed porcelain. They show restorations. Measurements: 7.5 x 8 x 6 cm (x2). In the British Museum can be seen a piece of great similarity to the present set (N Inv, 1847, 0712. 319). A jue is a type of ancient Chinese vessel used to serve mulled wine during ancestor worship ceremonies. It is shaped like an ovoid body supported by three extended triangular legs, with a long curved spout on one side and a counterweight rim on the other. They are a small Chinese equivalent of the ewer. The name jue is not original, but comes from the Shuowen Jiezi, a dictionary of the 2nd century AD. The vessel originated in the Neolithic as a ceramic vessel associated with the Longshan culture, between about 2500 and 2000 BC. During the Shang and Zhou dynasties of Bronze Age China, it became one of numerous Chinese ritual bronze designs. They present restorations.

Ritual vessel. China. Qing Dynasty, XVIII-XIX centuries. Patinated bronze. Measurements: 25 cm x 28 cm x 28 cm. Bronze vessel with two handles and foliate elements worked in relief on the oval body. Synthetic vegetal motifs incised in the bronze complete the decoration. Ritual vessels during the Qing dynasty represent a combination of art, religion and culture, serving as important ceremonial artifacts that connected the spiritual with the material in the daily life and ritual practices of imperial China.

Gu vessel for drinking wine or offering ritual libations. China, Qing dynasty, 19th century. Bronze. Measurements: 27 cm (height) x 18 cm (largest diameter). This type of vessel was used in the Shang and Zhou dynasties (1600-256 BC), although our example dates from the nineteenth century. It has the characteristic gu form: tall, slender body with a slightly flared base that tapers into a slender central section before widening again into a trumpet-like mouth, wider than the base. Its surface is usually decorated with taotie, mythological creatures from Ancient China, in relief.

Large Chinese Han Dynasty ceramic hu wine vessel in the form of bronze and lacquer prototypes. With a wide mouth, articulated rim, and an amber glaze characteristic of vessels of this period. The sides with incised decoration and taotie mask handles. This item has been thermoluminescence tested and the date of the last firing was estimated at 1,500 to 2,400 years ago. The TL test document is not included with this lot but an image is provided in the listing photographs. Height: 15 in x diameter: 13 1/2 in.
