Carl (Karl) Breitbach (1833 Berlin - 1904 Kassel) Village motif with playing children An early work by Breitbach that combines a landscape with a genre scene. Breitbach studied at the Berlin Academy and settled in Berlin in 1860 as a freelance genre and portrait painter. In the same year, Breitbach made his successful debut at the Berlin Academy exhibition and at L. Sachse's art exhibition in Berlin. In the years that followed, Breitbach completed his artistic training as a pupil of Ludwig Knaus in Berlin and Charles Gleyre and Thomas Couture in Paris. In addition to landscape painting, he devoted himself primarily to the rural genre, inspired by Knaus, and also produced excellent portraits. Breitbach was appointed professor at the Berlin Academy in 1894.
